North India is experiencing a cold wave; how can you protect yourself from the common cold and flu?

As temperatures dip to 1.8 degrees Celsius, here’s how you can protect yourself from illness.
Daphne Clarance writes: The cold wave continues to grip north and northwest India, with temperatures in Delhi’s Ayanagar dropping as low as 1.8 degrees Celsius. With an increase in seasonal flu and common cold cases, there are certain precautions to take to protect yourself from the cold weather and improve your immunity.
According to Dr. Neetu Jain, Senior Consultant, Pulmonary & Critical Care, Sleep Medicine, PSRI Hospital, New Delhi, the first thing that happens during a cold wave is that the body enters a condition of hypothermia. This occurs when you are exposed to cold conditions for an extended amount of time and your body begins to lose heat more quickly.
DRESS IN MANY LAYERS
“Rather than wearing a single thick coat, it is vital to cover yourself well in layers. Wear loose-fitting clothing. Your clothing should be loose, since this is more comfortable and breathable than tight-fitting clothing, and you should wear numerous layers, such as thermals, sweaters, and a jacket “Dr. Jain stated.
MAINTAIN YOUR HYDRATION
She also mentioned that during a cold spell, individuals tend to become dehydrated quicker since they consume less water. “They try to drink really cold water, which isn’t advised.
To stay hydrated, drink warm drinks, eat plenty of fruit, and eat semi-solid foods like khichdi or dalia “She stated.
THERE IS NO FIREPLACE IN THE HOUSE.
Keep a fireplace out of the home. Dr. Jain warned that while some individuals like making bonfires at home with doors and windows closed, it might lead to carbon monoxide poisoning.
